Ran 3 times across the Routeburn in 9 days. Had very hot humid weather, then freezing cold rain with ice crystals (hard rain) and the third day was a lovely day for a run.
Be prepared 🙂

Usually people turn around. If there is space for another night, some people stay another night.

How do they deal with this if the huts are fully booked? Do you have to turn around and leave or do they try to squash everyone in somehow?

So pleased we got through on monday. Thanks Mike for the local weather knowledge and car transfer.

Winter on the Routeburn.

We went to have a look at the Harris Saddle, on the 22nd June 2017. From Falls Hut, we followed tracks in the snow for about 1km. From there, we made our own for the next 2km. Very hard going, but the views were worth it. The bluffs near the Harris Saddle were covered with snow. It would have been extremely hard to get to MacKenzie hut. The avalanche risk looked high and definitely not worth the risk. A great day out and back.
