Lots of snow ready to avalanche ... See MoreSee Less
Still lots of snow...
Rocky Beer good thing we didn't do it in the off season! Pretty amazing though!
There is high avalanche risk at the Harris bluffs. We could see many avalanche paths old and new. Even with all the correct gear, I would NOT go there.
They went in yesterday, both had avalanche gear, both had beacons, and have done avalanche courses and are experienced ski-tourers from the UK. Assured me they would travel quickly and separately through avalanche terrain, and had left intentions with DOC and family. About as well-prepared as possible. Unlike a Frenchman I talked out of it last week...no companion to dig him out but still had full avalanche gear, no beacon, and wasn’t afraid of “only small avalanches affect NZ” Crazy! Sent him to Luxmore instead and told him go no further.
They will have about 500m of serious avalanche terrain to go through at the bluffs. I have been up there when the avalanches are coming down. Pretty scary stuff
Yes I hope they’ll be ok, they were very fit and pretty savvy so they should make the correct decisions
Just heard from Bex at QT DOC, they made it safely and basically ran across the bluff section, but they had a great time 😀
Good to hear, thanks Paul

Weather a bit better than when we did it in Jan last year!! Will just have to come back and do it again! 🙂
I have had plenty of wet/snow days. Not so many blue sky days 🙂
We went to have a look at the Harris Saddle, on the 22nd June 2017. From Falls Hut, we followed tracks in the snow for about 1km. From there, we made our own for the next 2km. Very hard going, but the views were worth it. The bluffs near the Harris Saddle were covered with snow. It would have been extremely hard to get to MacKenzie hut. The avalanche risk looked high and definitely not worth the risk. A great day out and back.
